WHY TRIALS?

Why do believers in Christ Jesus need to go through trials?

Trials are a sign of God’s approval of us not His disapproval. They often occur not because we have done anything wrong but because we are doing things right- or at least desire to. It is a test of faith in which we experience trouble or adversity.

To understand trials, we need to borrow from Job’s experience and why he had to pay such a heavy price.

“Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” (Job.1.8.NIV). JOB WAS PERFECT BEFORE GOD.

Then Satan responded; “Does Job fear God for nothing?” “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”
(Job.1.9-11.NIV).

Satan questioned Job’s motives and the reality of his righteousness. That Job worshipped God only because it profited him. Satan further implied that God was naive having obtained Job’s devotion by blessing and bribery. And that God had failed to reconcile the human race to Himself (Full life Study Bible note on Job 1:9)
This is the source of Christian trials. It is indeed a test of faith.

Jesus’ encouraging words: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John.16.33.NIV).

James added: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (Jas.1.2-4.NIV).

Job’s pains later turned to gains. This is also true for all who survive trials.

WORD: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” (Jas.1.12.NIV)
