WIN 100Jesus’ mission on earth was to seek and save the lost, and authentic, effective everyday evangelism is consistent faithfulness to Jesus’ life and principles. Evangelism is revitalisation, the creation and rebirth of new lives, and only that which is alive creates life. The urgent need for the proclamation of the gospel, that is, everyday evangelism today, is not less critical than in the period of the beginning of the Church. Many people to this day remain in unbelief, pride, and immorality until they are humbled and convinced of something else. That is the task of evangelism.
Apostle Paul draws our attention to a very important consideration: “For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Cor 4:5). The purposefulness of evangelism points to the uncompromising proclamation of the Gospel which does not have an alternative because the alternative is death, a lasting and eternal separation from the living God. And that is not the will of God because He is not interested in the death of a sinner, but that the sinner come to repentance (Ezek 33:11).
The key for effective everyday evangelism needs to be restored because the world is lost and continues to sink in its own sin and self-reliance. Prophet Isaiah wrote in the Old Testament: “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear” (Is 59:1-2). To spread the experience of salvation, everyday evangelism is the most essential task of the church and every born-again Christian.
Jesus’ question in the Gospel of Matthew to His disciples on identity, the concept of the Church and its “keys of the kingdom” provides foundational keys to effective everyday evangelism (Matt 16:13-20). True biblical evangelism is not just a marketing or maintenance strategy, but relies on the authority, revelation, and power outlined by Jesus in this narrative.
Jesus first asks what the culture says about Him, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” He later makes it personal with His disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” The first key to effective everyday evangelism is personal conviction because evangelism flows out of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, not public opinion, titles, or positions. Regardless of your age or years of preaching, you cannot effectively share a Jesus Christ you do not personally know or confess as your Lord and Saviour. Evangelism begins when we move past what our culture, secular theological opinions, or training say about Jesus and anchor our hearts in a personal confession of faith. John Wesley is a good example, particularly in his warm-hearted experience. Scholarship that is not subjected to the authority of Jesus Christ does not equal salvation. Sheep follow the Shepherd.
Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus’ response that, “Flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven,” points to divine revelation as the second key. Spiritual conversion is a supernatural work of God, not human persuasion or opinions. Peter’s confession tells us that confessing Jesus Christ leads to a new identity: an identity grounded in Covenant, hidden in Christ, that transforms self for effective everyday evangelism.
Peter’s declaration is another key to a bold, clear message, the ultimate bedrock Gospel summary for effective everyday evangelism: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” An effective everyday evangelism message centred on Jesus’ Cross, though foolishness to those who are perishing, must be clear, precise, and centred on Jesus’ identity. Regardless of the secular church culture of muddy water, effective everyday evangelism keeps the main thing the main thing. In Christ alone, our hope is found. Jesus is the resurrection Saviour, the living Lord, and the only way to reconciliation with God.
In response to Peter’s declaration, Jesus promises, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.” This is what the key to unshakable confidence can do for effective and authentic everyday evangelism. Jesus Christ promises to build His church, not on any one or group decision, but only on the truth of Peter’s and other disciples’ bold confession that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt 16:16). As Jesus’ followers, we witness from a position of guaranteed victory, not defeat. The church founded on a bold confession of Jesus’ authority will continue to grow and advance through the bold proclamation of Christ’s message and the display of His power, especially over ‘the gates of Hades,’ that is, Satan and all the forces of evil in the world opposed to Jesus Christ and His kingdom.
The church is not in a defensive posture; rather, the passage describes the church on the offence, actively coming against the gates (strong spiritual walls) of Satan’s kingdom. Regardless of opposition, deception, and heretical teachings, nothing can stop the power of Christ’s church from accomplishing God’s purposes on earth, especially through those who remain faithful to the original message of Christ as revealed in the New Testament and live in the power of the Holy Spirit. Gates are defensive structures, meaning the enemy is the one on the defensive. When we go out to share the gospel, we are storming the gates of darkness to rescue captives. We can be bold because Jesus promised that His mission cannot fail.
The key to spiritual authority is what Jesus promised when he said, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven…” The keys represent God’s authority, which he passes on to His followers in the church, His kingdom representatives on earth, for effective everyday evangelism. Keys open and close doors. When we share the gospel, we use the “keys” to open the door of salvation to those who believe, and to warn those who reject it that they remain bound. Believers carry the ultimate, heaven-backed authority to declare how a person can be saved. With these keys, believers expose and speak out against sin (Matt 18:15-18). We pray effectively for God’ purposes on earth; we restrict and defeat demonic powers and set spiritual captives free; we preach about the guilt of sin, God’s standard of righteousness and the judgment to come (Acts 2:23); we proclaim the opportunity for forgiveness and spiritual salvation for all who turn from their own sinful way and follow Christ (Jn. 20:23, Acts 2:37-40).
