Rev. Adetokunbo Oluyemisi Jaiyesimi at 70 embodies the profound intersection of education and spiritual leadership, serving as both a clergyman and a teacher who shapes minds in the classroom and nurtures souls in the faith. This dual vocation is a powerful journey of guiding individuals intellectually and spiritually. His life and ministry echo Christian teachings and remind us that every situation holds both education and spirituality. As Henry Brooks Adams wrote, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence ends.” Many remember teachers who cared for us, and we are better people because we knew them.
Rev. Jaiyesimi models a true teacher’s greatest impact, lived out day by day rather than spoken from a podium. His life is best summed up as a lived sermon, matching actions to words, because students often forget specific lectures or textbook chapters, but never forget how a teacher treated them, handled adversity, and lived with integrity.
The silent lesson from Rev. Jaiyesimi’s lifestyle resonates with a dedicated servant who never formally stands behind a pulpit, just as a faithful teacher preaches through patience, kindness, and steady presence. His life expresses an enduring ripple shaped by values like fairness, resilience, and compassion that students catch rather than just learn, passing from one generation to the next.
Born on 13th October 1956 in Middlesex, United Kingdom, to Chief A. O. Jaiyesimi and Chief (Mrs) R. A. Jaiyesimi, nee Fujah, Rev Jaiyesimi started his primary school education in the UK. He later attended Mainland Preparatory School, Lagos; Methodist Boys’ High School, Broad Street, Lagos (1969); Government College, Ibadan; and the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. In response to his ministerial calling, he trained as a Tent-making minister at the Methodist Theological Institute, Sagamu, Ogun State. He served as Vice-Principal of his alma mater, Methodist Boys High School, Broad Street, Lagos, and as Principal at Igbobi College, Lagos, and as Minister at the Methodist Church of the Trinity, Tinubu, Lagos.
He later moved with his family to the United Kingdom and served as Minister in King’s Lynn. He was School Chaplain at Shebbear College, North Devon. He served with the Methodist Church in Britain as circuit minister in Bristol; Barnsley Circuit; London; Grays Circuit, and Darlington and Teesdale Circuit. He continues to serve the Lord in various capacities.
Rev. Jaiyesimi’s name, etched in gold as a beacon of wisdom and a shepherd of old, remains a figure standing tall in the halls of Methodist Boys High School, Lagos. As Vice Principal, he guided his students with the school motto, “Non-Sibi, Sed Allis,” not for himself, but for others. According to one of his students, Mr Adedoyin Ezekiel, Rev Jaiyesimi came to Methodist Boys High School ‘with knowledge and passion’; he earned his students’ respect from the classroom to the home. In long robes and cassocks, his guidance made an impact. To his students, Rev Jaiyesimi was ‘not just a teacher, but a fatherly guide.’ With Bible verses, he remembered each student on birthdays in ‘his wisdom and care like the morning dew.’
In their 38-year marriage, Mrs Mojisola Jaiyesimi, nee Bamgboye, summarised how they met. According to her, “Rev and I met on a bus going towards Lagos Island in Nigeria. He had been to a Red Cross event. I sat beside him and noticed he was reading a book. I thought the book was about a strange ideology. I then started to talk about Jesus. I discovered he was a Christian and we exchanged addresses. There were no mobile phones then.” The exchange of addresses culminated in their wedding ceremony at St Mark’s Church, Kennington, United Kingdom, on 30th December 1984. The marriage is blessed with Jesuseun and grandchildren.
Through decades of service, from boy to priest, Rev. Jaiyesimi gave himself so others might feast. He imparted values with love and grace, leaving imprints of faith that time cannot erase. He is aptly described as a truly great man. His life is a sermon; his heart is a kind hand; he is a living example of God’s perfect plan. A giant in spirit, a true mentor.
For seven decades, Rev. Jaiyesimi has walked with grace, wisdom, and a tireless heart. As a teacher, he opened minds, patiently lighting the path of knowledge and helping countless students see their potential. As a clergyman, he opened hearts, offering spiritual shelter, comforting the broken, and showing people what it means to live a life anchored in faith.
Sir Tolu Omoniyi, Founder, Bobo Clothing, Lagos, aptly described Rev Jaiyesimi as ‘a lover of God, grounded in His word. A friend of young people. Passionate about raising godly youths. An evangelist without borders.’ Sir Omoniyi explained that ‘Rev Jaiyesimi was the first person I can remember who preached a salvation message to me one-on-one during Church service. He told me God sent him to me, so instead of officiating, he sat beside me in the congregation and chatted with me during the service. He followed up with visits to my house and gifted me books.’ Rev. Jaiyesimi did not just teach lessons from a book or preach sermons from a pulpit; he embodied them every single day. At 70, his oil has not run dry, and his light has not dimmed. To God be the glory for his decades of sacrifice, his laughter, his guidance, and his steadfast love. May God renew his strength like the eagle, and may this milestone year bring him and his family as much joy, peace, and blessing as he has poured into many lives. May his legacy continue to shine, and may his days ahead be filled with grace, strength, and enduring joy.
