One of the main monsters that is hunting the modern church and world could be linked to a generation of unwashed feet. Our feet are how we put our decisions in motion and get to places. The greatest fear of the generation of unwashed feet is that they will be found out, ‘that our dirty, grimy feet will be exposed.’ In our reading today, Peter put up a fight, insisting that Jesus stay away, washed his feet, and said, “You shall never wash my feet.”
The generation of unwashed feet always puts up a fight against the gospel and sees nothing wrong in denying Jesus and the Word of God. Following Jesus with the hope of eternal life does not make sense to a generation of unwashed feet. Those who are unwashed in their feet not only find it easy and reasonable to deny Jesus; they are ashamed to proclaim the gospel (Rom 1:16). Until Peter gave his feet to Jesus for washing, his Pentecost leadership platform became a reality, not just a dream. The generation of unwashed feet cannot lead to another Pentecost reawakening. The generation of unwashed feet does not want Jesus to handle their feet because to allow Jesus to touch their feet is to allow Jesus to touch their will, their heart, their emotions, and their mind.
Today, Maundy Thursday, we celebrate the 238th anniversary of the death of Charles Wesley. For this celebration to promote renewal and this new generation to achieve goals for the prosperity of all and to the glory of God, our feet need to be washed. Our feet represent our whole body; the foot itself is a complex mechanism made up of 23 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles and tendons.’ Our feet carry an enormous load, and it is a known fact that ‘the average person walks the equivalent of three times around the earth in a lifetime.’
The message of Maundy Thursday reminds us, ‘whether you know it or not, your feet represent all of you. After all, wherever your feet go, the rest of you must follow. If your feet hurt, your whole body hurts. If your feet are cold, you are cold all over. If your feet are dirty, you won’t feel clean until you wash them. Your feet take you anywhere you want to go. That’s why the Bible says, ” How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news (Rom 10:15).
Unwashed feet do not promote good news, hence the hymn by Elijah Albrighht Hoffman provides a redeeming opportunity to come to Jesus for the cleansing power as we sing together:
Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power?
Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour?
Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?
Are you washed in the blood?
In the soul-cleansing blood of the lamb?
Are your garments spotless? Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?
Lay aside the garments that are stained with sin.
And be washed in the blood of the lamb.
There’s a fountain flowing for the soul unclean.
O, be washed in the blood of the lamb.
Are you washed in the blood?
In the soul-cleansing blood of the lamb?
Are your garments spotless?
Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?
